After speculation around his interview with Ed Milliband, Russell Brand has come out in support of Brighton Pavilion Green Party candidate Caroline Lucas.
As part of his Trews politics series on his Youtube channel, Brand interviewed both Natalie Bennett and Lucas in London and eventually gave support for one specific party. He turned to viewers and said: “Are you a person that lives in Brighton Pavilion? If you are, you should definitely vote for this person, Caroline Lucas.”
He also referred to himself as a “narcissistic lunatic” when discussing why he should definitely not be running the country. He said the Green Party would be a better choice because they “have sensible people with sensible policies.”
While he doesn’t firmly commit to supporting the Green Party throughout the UK he calls both Bennett and Lucas “decent people”, squashing rumours he would be supporting the Labour Party on May 7. Brand is known for his lack of acceptance of the UK’s electoral system, something he believes will hold back Lucas: “with a first past the post electoral system you’re never going to have a significant Green representation.”
This comes in the wake of a survey which revealed 20% of 18 to 24 year olds say they will be voting Green in next week’s election.
