The combined BBC, ITV and SKY election exit poll has delivered the first shock of what is sure to be a turbulent night. The polls have indicated the Conservatives will win 316 seats with the Labour party left a further 77 behind on 239 seats.
The 316 seats could mean the Tories would be only 10 seats short of the 326 to win an absolute majority government. It would mean a gain of 9 seats from their 2010 total of 307.
For Labour this would signify a loss of 19 seats from 2010 and suggests the Scottish Nationalist Party would smash all records in Scotland and win 58 of the 59 seats, leaving Labour only one.
The Liberal Democrats could also have a long night with a return of only 10 seats, a huge drop of 47. New entrant UKIP are predicted to have 2 MPs.
