David Cameron has announced a firm decision against a fresh referendum on Scottish independence after 2016’s Holyrood elections.
The Prime Minister said that the issue had been settled by last year’s referendum which voted in favour of Scotland staying as part of the UK, “possibly for a lifetime”.
In last night’s Scottish leaders debate, First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon refused to rule out a second referendum following next year’s Scottish parliament elections.
At the televised debate in Edinburgh, Ms Sturgeon was jeered by the studio audience as she admitted another referendum was a possibility, but that the decision rested with the voters.
However, in an interview with the UK Parliament’s The House magazine, Mr Cameron said: “I believe it’s settled. I quote (ex-SNP leader) Alex Salmond – settled for a generation, possibly for a lifetime, is what he said. And I’m sticking with that.”
