After the tragic Lib Dem losses it is certain that the faces we will see in the Commons in the next governemnt will be very different to those we have seen over the previous one.
A large number of Liberal Democrat cabinet members have lost their seats. Perhaps the most prominent loss is Vince Cable, the former Business Secretary and MP for Twickenham since 1997.
Now this saddens me. It was Vince Cable, who in 2003 as a wise backbencher, questioned in Parliament the excessive borrowing of the Labour Government. The then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown laughed off the remark and accused Cable of “spreading alarm”, prompting Cable to reply with the prediction that a storm would come.
It did. In 2008.
Tonight has been a disaster for the Liberal Democrats, purely on the basis that they have “broken promises”. While I cannot deny that they have not delivered on some of their promises, I find it a shame that all the good policies in their manifesto are over shadowed by this.
After all, I think anyone would find it very difficult to name a single party, or even politician, who has been able to succeed in everything they have promised.
With Cable gone, this will be a huge loss to the Lib Dem party, a big loss to his constituency, and a big loss to any government.
