While millions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland take to the polls, it is the pets of voters who are claiming victory on social media.
The animals, mainly dogs, have become the top of today’s Twitter trends thanks to the hashtag #DogsAtPollingStations where canine owners have posted pictures of their dogs while they are out voting.

Twitter has erupted from the trend with hundreds of posts from all over the country.

The results from today’s vote won’t start to come in till 11pm tonight but that hasn’t stopped the topic from engulfing social media. While Facebook has been keeping track of how many post they have been to the polls, Twitter gave us dogs.

The trend was also adopted by animal rights campaigners to spread their message. The League Against Cruel Sports wanted to make people think about racing animals.
