The five opposition Party leaders will go head to head tonight as part of the campaign building up to the General Election on May 7.
Labour’s Ed Miliband, UKIP’s Nigel Farage, the Green’s Natalie Bennett, Nicola Sturgeon of the SNP and Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood will debate a range of issues in the live BBC televised debate.
Kicking off at 8pm the event has been dubbed the ‘Challengers Debate’ due to it featuring the five opposition parties. The Tory leader David Cameron will miss the debate alongside his coalition partner and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg.
With three weeks to go to the election and the polls maintaining a tight two-horse race between Labour and the Tories, this debate could be crucial. Miliband taunted Cameron for missing the debate whereas Nick Clegg said he was feeling “left out”.
It’s widely expected that Miliband will have a tough task this evening, having to fend off attacks from four smaller parties. However it will be interesting to see who he targets, many would assume UKIP, however he could gain a lot more by trying to bring down Sturgeon and boosting Scottish Labour votes. Alternatively, all five parties could take aim at the absence coalition’s record and particularly Cameron for his reluctance to participate in televised debates.

The debate will be chaired by David Dimbleby and be broadcast on BBC1.
