Nick Clegg has attacked his coalition partners this morning, claiming the Conservatives have peddled to UKIP’s success in the last five years.
The Liberal Democrat leader said the Tories “sought to mimic Ukip” in a dramatic lurch to the right since 2010.
He highlighted green issues, the European Union and civil liberties as areas where the gulf had widened between the two parties.
He said: “I certainly think that if you go back to the Conservative Party in 2010 it was all husky hugging, they professed an interest in civil liberties, they professed an interest in the environment, they professed an interest in being a centrist Conservative Party.
“Five years later it has been an almost non-stop struggle for me to try and remind the Conservatives they used to care about civil liberties, having tried to spend most of their time in the Home Office trying to trash them.”
During their time in coalition, the Lib Dems often bragged of their influence in preventing more conservative policies being passed.
